Birgette
Mentor

My name is Birgette. I am of Maori, Samoan and European decent and I have two children. I  have been working in the social sector as a qualified social worker since graduating. I obtained majors in both community development and social work and went on to complete a postgraduate in counseling with a focus on Narrative Therapy Training.

I have experience in developing and delivering programs to high-risk youth within high schools. I have worked with inmates at Waikeria Prison as a Drug Treatment Unit (DTU) counselor, completing assessments, running therapy groups and one on one counseling sessions.

I am currently working on finishing a Masters of ‘Applied Practice’ with my research focus being education around suicide prevention for youth in New Zealand and counseling part time at ‘Mainz Institute’ with their tertiary students.

I am able to relate to youth with a non-judgmental manner, which has allowed for me to build a solid foundation and high trust relationship with them. I am professional and compassionate in my work.

I am a qualified hairstylist, make up artist and professional singer. I competed at a representative level for various Auckland based basketball teams. I have been able to utilize the skills and knowledge I have obtained in order to develop and strengthen working relationships with youth. This has in turn enabled the youth to gain new skills, knowledge and renewed confidence to help them grow as individuals and within team environments.
